Does this sound familiar?
You wear a piece of clothing and take it off at the end of the day. It isn't dirty enough for the laundry, but it isn't clean because you've worn it. It ends up on "the pile."
For me, "the pile" accumulated on top of my dresser. Where's yours?
Cliff's Notes: If you would wear it again, put it away. If not, put it in the laundry.
Why do we make this so complicated?
For an item to land on "the pile," you've already decided it isn't dirty enough to launder. What, in your mind, makes it different from all the other clothes put away clean? What happens if you put it away with the other clean clothes? Is it contagious? It should probably be laundered if it's dirty or smelly enough that you don't want it touching other wearable clothes.
Once I asked myself these questions, my piling stopped. If I think it isn't dirty enough for the laundry, then its only obvious place is put away.
Save your energy. Make the decision binary.
Each item is either:
Wearable
Laundry
"Clean" and wearable aren't different enough to create two categories. Trust yourself. Garments (except for things like undies and socks) are made to be worn multiple times between laundering.
